the Crew
There are three team members that will be travelling the whole distance
from London to Cape Town.
Participants are already confirmed. Between us we have the mechanical
and medical experience to tackle obstacles we may encounter. Two
participants are medical practitioners and all have first aid training.
However, we appreciate that more is required and so all are now
trained in bus mechanical maintenance.
The group is widely travelled,
and can boast a total of eight separate trips to Africa itself,
of up to one year’s duration, as well as extensive excursions
to Asia, South America and Australasia. Members are already trained
in outdoor activity teaching, and have spent some time under military
instruction.
Andy Johnston
A lifetime in suburban Radlett has given Andy a
need to travel. He has seen most of Europe, North America, Australia
and South Africa. He has also joined Barry in Ethiopia teaching
English. He Graduated in 2001 in Neuroscience and has found little
need for it since. Taking the bus to Cape Town was his idea and
of all his stupid ideas this ranks somewhere in the middle. He has
an extensive knowledge of the moving image and completed a weekend
course before he left. He will be filming much of the trip but the
extrovert in him will mean he’ll be in front of the camera
a few times as well.
Barry Rose
Brought up in North London, Barry is a qualified
doctor most recently working in Accident and Emergency in Bristol.
His experience in Africa is drawn from four summers teaching English
and travelling in south west Ethiopia as well as time spent working
within the paediatric unit of the Somerset Hospital, Cape Town.
This, combined with his medical knowledge, make him an essential
member of the team.
Jonny Shawyer
A childhood in Kenya and numerous return
trips to southern and East Africa make Jonny the team member with
the most experience of Africa. He graduated last year from Oxford
and has enjoyed working for the African Studies Centre within the
University and as an editor of interactive science teaching material.
Previous expeditions to Uganda and Kenya as a primate researcher
and expedition photographer have provided him with useful skills
and familiarity with the equipment on the bus.
