On the east shore of Strangford Lough, near Greyabbey stands Mount Stewart, a fascinating 18th century house and garden - the home of the Londonderry family. The house and its contents reflect the remarkable history of the Londondeny’s who played a leading role in British social and political life.

As Foreign Secretary Lord Castlereagh, the son of the 1st Marquess, was an influential figure both during the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The original Empire chairs used at the Congress are on display in the dining room.

The travels of the family are reflected in the bedrooms which are named after European cities, with strong colours of the 'Rome' bedroom, particularly attractive.
The famous portrait of the race horse, Hambletonian, by George Stubbs, dominates the half landing above the stone hall.

The 98 acre garden at Mount Stewart is widely regarded as one of the greatest in the British Isles and earned it a World Heritage Site nomination. Largely created be Edith, Lady Londonderry, wife of the 7th Marquss, in the 1920s, it has an unrivalled collection of rare and unusual plants.

In the late spring the Sunken Garden is a blaze of vivid orange and yellow when the Azaleas reach their peak and the scarlet blooms of the Red Hand of Ulster in the Shamrock Garden are equally splendid. In high summer the Italian garden comes into its own with its magnificent array of roses and herbaceous plants in symmetrical beds.

A guided tour of the house takes in the fascinating history of the Londonderry family and their political connections as well as all the main rooms in the house.

There are dramatic views over Strangford Lough from the Temple of the Winds. The house tour includes world-famous paintings and stories about the prominent political figures to whom the Londonderry family played host.

Other attractions include the amazing Dodo Terrace with its extraordinary concoction of concrete animal statues, the beautiful lake and the Temple of the Winds designed by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart in 1785.
