Bushcraft Survival Camp - Summer / Autumn UK based camp  


We are very excited to be able to offer a week’s camp with the Bushcraft Company based at Cornbury Park in the ancient Wychwood Forest near Charlbury. The company was founded by Alex McBarnet who began learning Bushcraft under the popular expert Ray Mears.

During the week children will be taught the art of bushcraft survival, orienteering, fishing, cooking in the wild and they will compete in tribal team competitions under the supervision of fully qualified instructors. This should keep their brains ticking over during the holidays…

Itinerary

Monday

  • Introduction and safety brief
  • Children are split into tribes and allocated a tribe leader
  • Tribe camp set up
  • The tribes make tribal flags and necklaces
  • Lunch
  • Fire lecture with demonstrations
  • Children light their fires, cook marshmallows and get to know one another Primitive fishing and netting techniques
  • The Crayfish nets are set
  • Wide games in the nearby fields
  • Central supper of spaghetti bolognaise
  • Children go to bed in bell tents

Tuesday

  • Cooked breakfast of eggy crumpets and bacon
  • Children are shown the many different tools used in Bushcraft including machetes and axes as well as primitive tools
  • Children learn about snaring and each carve their own snare peg
  • The instructors show the many traps they have set up and how they work
  • Lunch
  • Children are given some string and told to design their own traps in their tribes
  • Children build their shelters and set up a new camp
  • Children light their fires using bow drill
  • Children cook their own supper in front of their shelters, using dutch ovens to roast venison in the embers
  • Big game of swallows and amazons
  • Children go to bed in their shelters

Wednesday

  • Children light their own fires and cook breakfast
  • Bow drill practice
  • Mountain biking / Archery
  • Children walk down to the lake for a lunch of whole roast salmon, crab and crayfish
  • Swimming and showers under the waterfall
  • Stalking lecture and stalking games through the forest
  • Cam /con games
  • Children make big pizzas from scratch and cook them in our outdoor clay oven
  • Night-line
  • Children go to bed in their shelters

Thursday

  • Big cooked breakfast
  • Children begin the navigation exercise
  • Children light fires and cook their own lunch
  • Children continue the navigation exercise
  • We cook a big supper for the students at base camp
  • The evening entertainment begins
  • Children sleep under the stars

Friday

  • Children cook a frontiersman breakfast
  • Children visit the fun range
  • Prize-giving
  • Big Bushtucker Barbecue

Itinerary

Monday

  • Children are met on arrival and split into tribes
  • Each tribe is given a map and coordinates to find their bell tent
  • The tribes find their bell tents and navigate into base camp where they set up their camps
  • Lunch
  • Fire lecture and bow drill practice
  • Children collect fire wood and light their fires
  • Children are given a lesson in knife techniques / knife safety
  • Snaring lecture
  • Children carve a snare peg each
  • Children are given a demonstration of how to skin and butcher whole rabbit and squirrel
  • Children cook rabbit stew for supper
  • Bed in bell tents

Wednesday

  • Cooked breakfast
  • Bow drill practice
  • Children are introduced to wilderness first aid, evacuation and emergency survival skills
  • Lecture on navigation using maps and compasses.
  • Children cook lunch of fresh trout over their fires
  • Shelter lecture
  • Children build lean-to’s for their tribes to sleep in
  • Children prepare supper of spit roast venison with fresh vegetables
  • Supper
  • Pumpkin carving
  • Games
  • Bed in shelters

Tuesday

  • Children cook bacon on hot rocks
  • Bow drill practice
  • Lecture on wild foods, including medical and nutritional properties
  • Children go on a plant walk through the forest
  • Wilderness cookery lessons begin in our massive scandinavian teepee
  • Lunch of nettle soup, fresh bread and wild berry crumble all made by the students
  • Hunting, tracking and trapping lecture with demonstrations of extensive traps made by our instructors
  • Children embark on a short tracking exercise
  • Children learn how to prepare wild game, and use the clay oven to cook their meat
  • Games and stories round the fire
  • Bed in their bell tents

Thursday

  • Cooked breakfast
  • The students begin their survival navigation exercise
  • Lunch
  • Children continue the survival exercise
  • Central supper around the fire Games
  • Children sleep under tarpaulins which they have set up

Friday

  • Children cook a frontiersman breakfast
  • Prize-giving
  • Children visit the fun range using sling shots
  • Big Bushtucker Barbecue of alternative meats
