ABOUT THE TRIP: The January Escape
This week is for adults only and has developed
as a more elegant option for those who do not
need to book within school holidays
We stay at the Meierhof
Hotel / www.meierhof.ch
/ .
The Meierhof hotel is a gracious 4* establishment
only one bus stop from the Parsennbahn. Its food
and wine are the pride of its owner, Reit Frey,
and we have enjoyed a warm welcome since we first
stayed in 2004.
This group continues in the ski tradition
of ‘Ab Schwendi ad Schewendi’ and
we enjoy long days of bonhomie on the mountains.
Opt in or out of skiing if you prefer to include
some the many other options in Davos.
The Club always extends a welcome to friends of
friends so there is no presumption that skiers
know Davos from the past. Please e mail with questions

Deposits:
A deposit of £500 is required for
each ski trip. The balance is payable on November
30th.
Prices:
These prices are final and will
hold until the end of the booking period.
Booking:
Is open until each trip
is full. A minimum numbers of 10 are required.
Delays:
Should there be a delay
in the outbound or inbound flights beyond the
control of Smaug Abroad, recompense will be available
only through travel insurance.
Visas:
No visas are required
for those with British Passports.
Health:
There are no vaccinations
required for visits to Switzerland. Consult your GP if any aspect of your fitness
gives you concern.
Insurance:
Comprehensive Insurance cover is included
in the package price for all skiers. If you have
your own cover a rebate will be included in the
final invoice.

Please note that electronic items and cameras
are most effectively insured under the all risks
section of your household policy.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
European
Health Insurance Cover and your insurance.
Please note that Switzerland
is now included in the area to which European
Health cover applies. If you have an accident
the insurance companies require that you present
your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) at
the hospital. This reduces the amount the hospital
charges the insurance company. Without the EHIC
you yourself will be liable for the excess.
Please collect an application
form from a Post Office or the Smaug Abroad Ltd.

(7 days), by post allow 3 weeks.
Every individual
will now be issued with a card but please note:
An adult application must accompany a child’s
application.
Insurance:
Comprehensive Insurance cover is included in the
package price for all skiers.
If you have your own cover a rebate will be included
in the final invoice.
Winter ski nsurance includes:
• £3,000 Cancellation and Curtailment
• £5,000,000 Medical and treatment
expenses
• £15 per day Hospital Benefit
• Travel delay £20 forf the first
12 hour period, £10 thereafter up to £100
• Holiday Abandonment up to £3,000
• Missed departure up to £1,000
• Personal accident - maximum benefit of
£25,000
• Personal Liability up to £5,000000
• Legal Expenses up to £10,000
• Personal Effects and Baggage up to £2,000
• Personal Money up to £500
• Lost ski equipment up to £600

Please note that any known medical condition must
be disclosed in advance no matter who has arranged
the insurance. Please be in touch with the Ski Club office
if necessary.
Risk Assessments
A full risk assessment has been carried
out for all aspects of the trip and is available
should you wish to see it.
We would particularly make the following three
points:
a) seat belts are not fitted on Swiss coaches;
b ) helmets are increasingly worn by skiers in
Davos but there are only a limited number available
for hire.
c ) Swiss mountain food includes nuts so those
with allergies need to be particularly careful
Dietary Requirements
If anyone has any special dietary requirements
please let us know so we can warn the hotel and
the airline in advance. It is important that all
food allergies are also listed. Vegetarian
food is always available at the hotel.

MEDICAL INFORMATION
We will be staying at 1,600 metres and skiing
at about 2700 metres
You can avoid mild altitude symptoms if you
* Drink plenty of FLUID such as Coke, 7UP or especially
tapwater, which is OK to drink in Davos (adults
- alcohol unfortunately doesn't count as fluid!).
* Get up in time to have a really good BREAKFAST
in the hotel each morning and also have a good
LUNCH.
* Take a SNACK to eat between ski runs : chocolate
or biscuits (but not while actually skiing in
case you choke, so don't chew gum).
* Get some SLEEP at night.
* HEADACHE: Drink more
fluid (adults - and/or less alcohol!).
* BLISTERS Wear only one
pair of ski socks and report early to the medics
to have blisters covered. Your boots should be
checked for fit too.
* SKIN BURN Wear sunscreen
(MM sells it) every day on your lips nose ears
chin.
* HYPOTHERMIA Always have
gloves and a cap with you. Wear extra clothing
if you have felt cold, and if the temperature
drops you will be reminded.
* SNOW EYES Wear glasses
or goggles if it's sunny or snowing.

FITNESS
Before skiing it is strongly recommended that
all adults do some extra exercise.
However good a skier you are,
the altitude and exertion mean that your enjoyment
of the trip is bound to be greater if you are
even a bit fitter than usual.
So, every minute of exercise counts. Suggestions
to get you started include ...
* Always use the stairs instead of the lift or
escalator
* Get an exercise ball for strengthening core
muscles
* Swim, cycle or take up Scottish dancing
* Do repeats of 10 lunges (with one foot a short
stride ahead, in turn right then left) and 10
squats (with feet shoulder width apart) to exercise
the thigh and calf muscles. Do as many repeats
as you can each day.
Search Google for Canadian Air Force Exercise
Programmes on the net - 5BX for men and SBX for
women.
Although now considered rather old-fashioned,
these exercises are graded according to sex, age
and fitness level - and they work!
Ideal preparation for the ski season.

SAFETY ON THE SLOPES
IF ANYONE IS INJURED ON THE SLOPE
* STOP
* STAY with them, but keep warm yourself, and
talk to reassure them.
* CALL EXTRA HELP and your instructor, and someone
should get help from the nearest lift who can
call the emergency wagon if needed.
* COVER the hurt person if you can, but don't
remove your own clothing or their boots.
* DON'T MOVE them, but stick crossed skis upright
in the snow a few yards above as a warning to
other skiers.
* DON'T give them food, drink or alcohol
Remember that injuries are most common
* earlier in the holiday and later in the day
* in deeper snow
* if you are tired, cold or hungry
* if you are performing a stunt to impress
