Tour Overview

In both languages, students will find that the level demanded of them at scholarship is a considerable step-up from what they have experienced so far. These courses are of most benefit to children who have been in the top two Latin and French sets.

Latin: the course is designed to help students to cope with the demanding grammatical structures required at scholarship level in Latin, as well as helping to deal with the advanced translation and comprehension passages which they will face. In addition to consolidating work they have done in B Block, the course will introduce the key grammar topics for the scholarship syllabus, and will also provide students with guidance on how to attack complex Latin passages.

French: this course will help the students to reach the level of grammatical accuracy in their writting, which is a key feature of the scholarships exams in comparison to Common Entrance. Students will leave with a much more rigorous understanding of French grammar, and will be able to write French more accurately. Whilst the oral component is not as heavily-weighted in most scholarships exams, students will also be given intensive practice in speaking and listening.

Teaching groups are kept to a small size, and it is expected that the students will receive the equivalent of around three weeks' tuition (on the current Dragon timetable) in each subject. All course materials (produced specifically for this course) will be provided.

The course are run by Dr Peter Norton (ex-Head of Classics, French teacher) and his wife Susan, who taught French at St Edward's for ten years. The courses take place at their home in South West France. The house is well equipped for down-time (swimming pool, volley-ball, table tennis, croquet, table football, badmington, petanque), and there will also be outings arranged for students. Whilst work is the main focus, students will find themselves able to relax and have fun with their friends in a comfortable and homely environment.

Planned Tour Itinerary

Teaching will be in small groups, with 4-5 hours of tuition each day. Although the course will cover all of the four skills (oral, aural, writing and reading), the emphasis will be on broadening the pupils’ range of passive vocabulary and introducing them to the extra tenses which are required for success at this level.

Tuition will be concentrated in the mornings, and the afternoons will feature a range of cultural and sporting activities, and sightseeing in the local towns in this historic region. The children will also be involved in cooking the evening meals – usually a barbecue at that time of year.
